Interview with Mr. David Ng, newly appointed Managing Director of International SOS Myanmar

Can you tell us more about yourself? What is your background?

I oversee all of International SOS’s business in Malaysia and Myanmar encompassing over 470 employees. International SOS is the world’s leading medical and security assistance company operating in 92 countries. In 2015, I was appointed as the Vice-Chairman of British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (“BMCC”). I serves as one of the Board Members since 2010. I also serve as the Treasurer of Malaysian German Chamber of Commerce (“MGCC”) since 2017. I hold a BSC in Civil Engineering (Surrey University) and an MBA (Warwick University). I am also a Fellow of ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants England and Wales).

Given your experience as Managing Director of International SOS Malaysia, will you have the same strategy with Myanmar market?

There are many similarities as well as differences between the two markets. Both markets have a high concentration of oil and gas activities and therefore International SOS supports same clients in both countries. There are differences in the mining and electronic sectors. Myanmar has more mining sites whereas Malaysia attracts more electronics manufacturing. However, the approach and priorities are the same. We focus on our people and customers. Our people are very passionate in what they do and they focus on delivering great service quality to their clients every day.

What are the challenges that you have to overcome in Myanmar due to the COVID-19 pandemic?

The current challenges are the restrictions of movement for people, both domestically and internationally, due to the resurgence of COVID-19 pandemic. We had to adapt our operation to keep delivering our medical services with the highest health and safety standards and support our patients who need specific medical treatments overseas. Our Myanmar operations, clinic and business development teams have been working hard and fully committed to supporting our clients in such challenging time.

How did International SOS adapt to COVID-19 pandemic?

International SOS is in the business of protecting people and saving lives. All our health, security and assistance experts have extensive experience preparing for pandemic situations. First, our robust business continuity plan (BCP) has helped us to secure our operations and the delivery of our life-saving services. Second, with our key medical and security expertise, we have been able to help our clients navigating this pandemic, developing and reviewing their pandemic and business continuity plans, while building their workforce resilience.
