Interview with Mr. Jean Curci from Yangoods, Public Choice Award Winner at Young Entrepreneurs 2018

How did you find the idea of branding as Yangoods?

We were having a wonderful evening with Delphine Delorme (Yangoods Creative Director and Co founder) and a friend showing us his collection of Myanmar vintage postcards. We immediately knew that we could create something truly beautiful with vintage art. All of us had friends who looked for modern gifts to bring back from Myanmar when they go home. We wanted to fulfill that and created designs with a bit of twist. We bring together Myanmar’s iconic art with 21st century sensibilities which is Myanmar, both past and present.

Yangoods is now a local and influencing fashion trend to both Burmese and foreigners, so what is your

company strategy?

Our mission statement is all about love for culture and quality products. We strive to make products Myanmar people are proud of, to build up a better community engagement, and keep on researching for new product designs for our customers. We started with a five years plan, and we modified it as we learned and developed. Find the right balance between tradition and modernity is a constant challenge that we embrace.

What is the unique about your business compared to other locally produced fashion brand?

We believe in our products speaking for themselves. Whether it is a bag or a lifestyle item, we strive to give the best quality for the price. Also, people feel proud of showing their culture. Fashion is all about how it makes you feel when you wear this bag, this dress. This is probably the two important aspects to our customers. Next, we keep a tight-knit community with our audience through social media and a loyalty program called Yangoods Insider. We are very active. We love to hear the feedback from our fans!

How many categories of your products in the market?

Currently in shops around 250 products, taking inspiration from different periods throughout Myanmar’s rich history and cultural heritage. We offer an ever-expanding product line ranging from fashion accessories, decors to memorable gifts for resident cultural/fashion enthusiasts to business seeking quality bespoke items. Since four years, we have created over 1500 products!

Do you have any plan to expand your business?

While I cannot give too many details at the moment, 2019 will be very busy for us. We’re currently working on our E-commerce website, a new office, and Yangoods Academy online courses to train to fashion jobs, and a new shop in a new city, our fourth after Yangon, Mandalay and Bagan.

What are your main challenges and how do you overcome them?

Recruitment and weak skillsets in fashion industry are our principal challenges in Myanmar. In order to overcome this common issue, we have developed an internal training program: Yangoods Academy. Both internal and external senior staff are teaching their domains of expertise, in order to develop competences.

Finally, what advices would you give to young entrepreneurs since you are the winner of Public Choice Award?

Find partners that share your passion and make it happen.

I do not believe in one man – or woman – army: find people who complement your weaknesses.

Then build a strong team that resonate with your values and vision, and set a distant goal.

Finally, work hard! Yangoods is the fruit of days, nights and weekends of work.
